Waiting on Wednesday (3)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

My third selection for Breaking the Spine is a book that is also going on the Dark Days Tour coming to my town in the beginning of July, Insignia by S.J. Kincaid.
Insignia (Insignia, #1)
Amazon Book Description (Publication Date: July 10th, 2012):
More than anything, Tom Raines wants to be important, though his shadowy life is anything but that. For years, Tom’s drifted from casino to casino with his unlucky gambler of a dad, gaming for their survival. Keeping a roof over their heads depends on a careful combination of skill, luck, con artistry, and staying invisible.

Then one day, Tom stops being invisible. Someone’s been watching his virtual-reality prowess, and he’s offered the incredible—a place at the Pentagonal Spire, an elite military academy. There, Tom’s instincts for combat will be put to the test and if he passes, he’ll become a member of the Intrasolar Forces, helping to lead his country to victory in World War III. Finally, he’ll be someone important: a superhuman war machine with the tech skills that every virtual-reality warrior dreams of. Life at the Spire holds everything that Tom’s always wanted—friends, the possibility of a girlfriend, and a life where his every action matters—but what will it cost him?

Gripping and provocative, S. J. Kincaid’s futuristic thrill ride of a debut crackles with memorable characters, tremendous wit, and a vision of the future that asks startling, timely questions about the melding of humanity and technology.

What I am Worried About: Ender's game/ trilogy and the Shadow books that came after as companion novels are one of my all time favorite books. Because these books were so well done and this one sounds so familiar to that series, I'm worried that it won't live up. There was one review that compared the two, which I was very appreciative for, that said this book did well in the comparison between the two and he had just read the Ender books recently.

Why I am excited: I always love school/training books with a sci fi twist, so I'm excited to see what this author brings to the table. And hope to meet this author when he comes to my town!

  2. I just posted my ARC review of this one yesterday and gave it 4 1/2 stars. You're right to be excited about it! It is SO MUCH FUN to read, I love it. I thought it would be too middle grade for me, but it really had me doubled over with laughter. It was fantastic!

I like the idea that you speak of what you're concerned about with a new book as well as what you're looking forward to.
