Part II Interview with Sara Zaske, author of The First

Welcome back to Part II of the Sara Zaske interview!

Author Blurb:
Sara Zaske has lived a variety of places including eight years in Oakland, California where The First is set. A former journalist, she currently works as a freelance editor and writer in Berlin, Germany. She also hosts the book blog: YA Fantastic Book Review. Occasionally, she still dreams of California.

Author Interview Part II.
1. What authors have inspired you and affected how you write?

Ursula LeGuin and Margaret Atwood are two of my all-time favorites. LeGuin builds amazing worlds; Atwood has an wicked sense of humor; and they both tell fantastic stories with insightful social commentary.

2. How do you go about writing a book-- plotting everything out from the start or creating your characters and seeing how it goes?

I like to have almost everything figured out before I write page one. OK, sometimes I just have to write the opening scene and then I go back and figure out the rest, but I do spend a lot of time imagining and re-imagining before I begin typing in ernest. Of course, the plan always changes, but I like to have a very well-developed story in mind before I begin.

3. Have you started another book? Can you give us a hint of what it's about?

I am revising a book I wrote before The First that I'm tentatively calling Spitfire. It's about a girl who has a magical ability to make fire. The only problem is she can't control it, and it makes her spectacularly unpopular, as a few burnt-down houses and body parts will do. Then, along comes a handsome boy and then, a dragon...   It's kind of like Steven King's Carrie meets A Princess Bride.

Part I Interview with Sara Zaske, author of The First

First_blog_tourw.jpg
Link to the Blog Tour: The First Blog Tour

As a reviewer, I read a lot of bad books. Sometimes to the point where I almost want to hang my hat. Then every once in a while, I'll get a gem like The First by Sara Zaske, and those novels make it all worth it.

I originally read this when I received a copy through Librarything giveaways, and scanned through a few pages. Then a few more. Soon I realized that I was putting down everything to finish this terrific book.

As soon as I finished, I emailed Sara Zaske, the author, to let her know how much I loved her book. She responded back saying that I made her day and that  I should start a blog to have a home for my 100+ reviews. Now you know! She was the inspiration for the birth of Ensconced in YA.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Book Description:
A young adult urban fantasy/eco-thriller, The First, follows 15-year-old Cassie Craig as she discovers that her new friend Violet is more than just a little weird. She’s part of a group of people who were here on earth long before us. Powerful people. And they aren’t exactly happy with the way humans have been treating their planet...
The First is available on Amazon and has just debuted on Smashwords!

My Amazon Review:  The First by Sara Zaske

Author Interview Part I.

1. Your book is one of the few that I have awarded my five star review. I was really drawn into the story from the start. How did you come up with the magical world that you've created in The First?

Homesickness started it all. One gloomy winter here in Berlin, I really needed to spend some time back in the sunny San Francisco Bay Area, if only in my mind. Luckily, that setting fit really well with some ideas I wanted to explore about the unethical power of nature. I gave my magical people influence over nature minus any sympathy for humanity, and then put Violet and Cassie in between them and us.

2. I had a hard time deciding which amazing female character I liked more, Cassie or Violet. Do you have a favorite? Why did you pick that character?

It's a tough choice. I think Violet with her quiet strength is more likable overall, but personally, I have to go with Cassie because I'm a bit of a bumbling loudmouth myself. She's also tough, and much braver than I could ever be.

Updates and Poll results are in for "What do you look for most in a book?"

Addendum: Just wanted to let you all know some exciting news!!! Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed In Blood has agreed to give away a copy of her new book, Girl of Nightmares and do an interview! It's tentatively scheduled for Sept 4th! Stay tuned!!!

What do you look for most in a book?

The top answer was:
3 dimensional characters 66%

I totally agree with this. If I think about what I enjoy most more than anything else in the book, is very interesting and thoughtful characters that have explainable personalities and actions. There's nothing I dislike more than a character that is just there to be "filler." Like the token "mean girl" or the "bad boy" that everyone is drooling over.

Second place was:
Great unexpected twists 54%

This is another very important aspect for me in a book. I love being surprised-- by characters, plot, and decisions. This keeps a book from getting boring and keeping the reader sucked in and engaged.

Third place:
World Building 37%
I think this can elevate or sink a book very quickly. If I don't believe the world I'm reading about, I quickly get frustrated and stop reading. Since I'm in medicine, dystopians have a hard time winning me over-- but when they do... they usually get me for good!

Fourth place:
A great villain 29%
This isn't a necessity for me, but a terrific villain can really add brownie points for me. I like to see that an author has made this person very real and believable, and I can empathize and understand why this person made the wrong decisions he/she did.

Fifth place:
A great love story 25%
I'm a girl, so I am a sucker for well done romances. But I absolutely hate cheesiness. If it's cheesy at all, I get very frustrated very quickly. So this can really work against a novel.

Last place
Beautiful prose and other 12%
The prose also isn't a necessity-- the book DOES have to be well written, however. I think of Lauren Oliver when I think of beautiful prose. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge plus, especially when I sigh after each phrase. Shiver by Maggie S also comes to mind.

Thanks, and don't forget to enter the next poll! Hunger games versus Twilight!

Waiting on Wednesday (6)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

My choice this week has to do with an amazing book I just finished a few days ago, Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. I am eagerly anticipating the sequel, Girl of Nightmares.

Girl of Nightmares (Anna, #2)Goodreads Book Description: It's been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can't move on. His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live--not walk around half dead. He knows they're right, but in Cas's eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.

Now he's seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he's asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong...these aren't just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Cas doesn't know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn't deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it's time for him to return the favor.

Why I am excited: I fell in love with the first book, which totally lives up to its hype.  I cannot wait to read the next installment.

Why I am worried: It's so hard to live up to a tremendous first book... but I believe that Blake is up to the challenge!

Update: I am so incredibly excited! Kendare Blake has agreed to do an interview. Stay tuned for it in September!

Part II of Interview with Lisa Burstein, author of Pretty Amy

We're back with the second half of the awesome Lisa Burstein interview!

Blurb about Lisa Burstein: Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers at Eastern Washington University. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her very patient husband, a neurotic dog and two cats. Pretty Amy is her first novel. She never went to her senior prom.

Part II of Lisa Burstein Interview:

1) We all want to know-- was your actual prom anything similar to what Amy's was like?
I would have liked to go to my senior prom. :).
No one asked me. I had a boyfriend at the time but he was a junior and I guess I didn't want to ask him. There was a boy in my grade I was friends with, he was also friends with two of my good friends to and basically he was like I will take one of you to the prom. It went on for two weeks of his trying to decide which one of us to take. It was weird and stressful, like an episode of the bachelor before that show existed. Guess who he picked? The pretty one. Some friend!

2) Any words of advice for writers suffering from writer's block?
This is what everyone says, but its really true, you need to write through it. You can't edit a blank page. Also I find it helps to know what I am going to write about before I write about it. As in having a topic, or a line to get me started with each writing session. I never start with a blank page.

3) Tell us more about the book about Cassie, one of the characters from Pretty Amy. Will this be the same events from Cassie's point of view, or will this be entirely in a different time?
DEAR CASSIE is going to occur after PRETTY AMY ends, when Cassie is sent to a rehabilitation retreat in the wilderness. It is told in diary format and each chapter is a day of her 30 day stay.

Part I Interview with Lisa Burstein, author of Pretty Amy

Pretty Amy
Welcome back everyone! Today I am very excited to introduce Lisa Burstein, the author of the YA novel, Pretty Amy and to give away 2 bracelets and signed bookmarks!

I noticed this book was getting rave reviews, so I knew I had to take a look. And what woman doesn't like to relive prom? OK, so this prom was a little different, but the characters were captivating.

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Goodreads Book Description: Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

Amazon review for Pretty Amy: Pretty Amy

Blurb about Lisa Burstein: Lisa Burstein is a tea seller by day and a writer by night. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from the Inland Northwest Center for Writers at Eastern Washington University. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her very patient husband, a neurotic dog and two cats. Pretty Amy is her first novel. She never went to her senior prom.

Interview Part I of Lisa Burstein

1) How did you start writing?
I tell this story on my website, but it's true. My first short story was a Thanksgiving tale from the point of view of the turkey from freezer to oven to plate. I wrote it in second grade and my teacher went nuts for it, because it was so different from what anyone else did. Her approval of my creativity was the start, for sure. But I went to college for writing and also to grad school, so I really, really wanted to make it my career. It still isn't my full-time career, but I'm so glad I have the opportunity to share my work with others.

2) Are aspects of your characters derived from yourself or people that you know? In what ways?
I was a lot like Amy. Just like her I had such a desire to belong, to fit in, to have people who understood me. I wanted that so badly and I guess I never felt like adults understood that. It was most of the reason I wrote PRETTY AMY. If I'd had it when I was in high school I feel like I would have been able to understand my feelings better. I wouldn't have felt so alone. That feeling was something I never admitted to anyone, not even my friends and I want to let teens know it's okay to feel lonely even surrounded by friends and family.

3) Who was the most fun character to write about?
Well I am writing a book from Cassie's point of view now and that is REALLY fun. She just says whatever she thinks and has no filter, which is really fun to see how far I can go with her.

Review: Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)
Wow. WOW. I finally finished Anna Dressed In Blood yesterday (I had a semi day off!), and I was completely floored. It was definitely one of the best books I've read all year.

My Rating: 5 out of 5  stars

This book has received rave reviews from some of my favorite bloggers, so I knew I had to try it. And boy, were they right. It's so hard to be truly original these days, and Anna Dressed in Blood has it in spades with with a freshly, unique protagonist and voice.

Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake is one of my favorite reads of the year. The protagonist Cas is a ghost killer. He is one of very few people who can do this, and he is determined to track down the ghost that killed his father. He moves from place to place to put these spirits to rest, and meets new friends when he tracks down Anna Korlov, the girl dressed in blood who has terrorized the town. What happens is so unexpected and right, and everyone who loves YA (and even those who don't read horror) should read it.

I had the pleasure of reading this bit by bit, and I couldn't wait to race home to get to read more. The characters are terrific, three dimensional, and very deftly drawn. I loved the voice of the protagonist, Cas, and Anna herself, is probably one of my favorite characters ever written. The mean girl, Carmel, is another star in her own right, and breaks out of the typical popular girl mold, which I really appreciated. Women are probably the most powerful characters in the novel, despite the protagonist being a skilled ghost killer, and I appreciated that.

Overall, a smashing success by Blake, and terrifically well written. A must read for any YA fan. I am thrilled to see what else Blake has up her sleeve.

Curmudgeon's Corner: Why I love YA

I have had one of the hardest weeks of my life this week. I just started my fellowship in Pediatric GI on Monday and I haven't slept more than 3 hours a night since. I've had 14 hour days, and been on call all night and had to come in once to remove a penny from an esophagus. But every day, when I get home, I take a hot shower and pick up my kindle. I know I'm going to escape for 10 minutes into a different world before I go to sleep. Right now, I'm reading Anna Dressed in Blood, which is a fantastic book. I'm not sorry that I haven't finished it because it is so good I look forward to reading one more chapter every day. YA is an escape from the real world for me-- a way to release stress and to not be myself for a few minutes. I love how great the stories are, how clear the writing, and how engaging the characters. It's not too dense, but meaningful and wonderful still all the same.

I love when I can get lost in books... here are some of my favorites:
Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1) Before I FallUnwind (Unwind, #1)The Giver (The Giver, #1)

Why do YOU love YA?

Update: I just found this amazing giveaway by Beth Revis and lo and behold, she wants us to post on why we love YA! Why, I have a post already for JUST THAT! Here is a link to win the fantabulous prize she has for one lucky winner. I'm so jealous I'm already salivating!

Geez. I was hoping it would be an easy question today... no such luck. Well, there are some books that I would love to add to my book collection. I would probably get a nice hardback version of Bitterblue, by Cashore, which probably was my favorite read of the year. I would also like to utilize the fact that I can spend whatever I want for these books, so would love to get a first edition of something-- like a really old copy of Shakespeare's plays or Lord of the Rings trilogy. :-)

Curmudgeon's Corner (CB): Romance and relationships

Hi, I'm CB, and I'm Christina's sister. I'm so pleased and proud to be a guest writer on her blog! Not least because this is part of a long history the two of us have of ranting about books to each other.

Just as an introductory note to my reading/writing preferences: I tend to really like to rant, sometimes jumping from topic to topic, and I tend to read a lot of non-YA, mostly science fiction and fantasy but not restricted to that. I'll try to stay in YA-ish territory, but no promises! And I'm a bit of a curmudgeon, so I thought I'd start off with displaying my curmudgeonly tendencies for all to see, so you know what you're getting into... So, romance and other relationships!

Romeo and Juliet Romance, of course, has a long tradition of trumping all other sorts of relationships in works featuring Young Adults, dating back at least as far as Romeo and Juliet. But you know what? These days, I almost never even think about the guys I had the OMG CENTER OF MY UNIVERSE WHAT WILL I EVER DO WITHOUT THEM intense romances in high school and college. The relationships that still endure from those days? The relationships with my sister and my mom and my dad. The relationships with my best friends. Those are the ones that have stood the test of time; those are the ones that, looking back, were and have remained the most important to me. Even now, when I'm married to a guy I think is totally and completely awesome, my relationships with my family (and his family, for that matter) and the deep bonds with my friends are still so very important to me.

So I tend to really adore books that give relationships other than romance an important part to play. Of course romance is an important part of most people's lives, but so are a lot of other relationships. Sarah Rees Brennan is one author who really thinks about this. In her Demon trilogy, there are eventually various romantic pairings, but the most important relationship is between two brothers, and there are a plethora of other relationships -- familial, professional -- to round out the story. Sort of like real life, how about that! Team Human (Brennan and Larbalestier) obviously contains romance, but it's really a book about friendship and what friendship means. I loved it.

The Demon's Lexicon (The Demon's Lexicon Trilogy, #1)Team HumanGraceling (Graceling Realm, #1)Bitterblue (Graceling Realm, #3)

I also think Kristin Cashore's Seven Kingdoms books also do this well; in Bitterblue, in particular, the important relationships tend to be friendships and family, and not so much romance; and Fire, while it features an important romance, situates that romance in the context of other people. (Oh, yeah, that's something else. No romance ever exists in a vacuum! No matter how STAR-CROSSED and SOUL-BONDED a pair might be, they still have to hang out with friends or family or co-workers or something once in a while, unless it's a seriously dysfunctional relationship!)

Code Name Verity
I also must give a shout-out here to the best book I've read all year, Code Name Verity (Elizabeth Wein), which has no romance, which focuses on a female friendship during WWII. Warning that this is a very intense book, though.

There we have it! I would love if you would comment on this great guest post! If you enjoyed it, please see her website for more great posts! charlie-ego.livejournal.com

Waiting on Wednesday (5)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

My selection for this week's WoW is perhaps a bit of a cheat. I've already read this book, but it's so fantastic that I absolutely must talk about it. This book is called Elemental by Antony John, and it is the first in a dystopian YA trilogy.
Elemental
Goodreads Book Description (Publication Date: Nov. 21): A mysterious and powerful fantasy adventure from a Schneider Award winner.

In the near future, most of the population of the United States has been destroyed by the plague. The few remaining survivors live in colonies on the barrier islands off the East Coast. In one colony near Cape Hatteras, almost all the members have elemental powers and can control wind, water, earth, and fire. All but sixteen-year-old Thomas. When the Guardians, the powerful adult leaders, are kidnapped by pirates seeking to take over their colony, it is up to Thomas and a small group of teens to save them and preserve the mysteries of the island.

This book is fantastic and is going to be one of my ARC giveaways in September, signed by the author. It doesn't hurt that Antony John is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

My Review: 5 out of 5 Stars
I would like to preface my review with some background so the reader can understand where I am coming from when I review a book from a trilogy. I have a love/hate relationship with trilogies. There are certain factors I always look for in a first book. It's hard to rate based on completeness until the entire trilogy is done. The first book always tends to be the "set up" book. So what I look for: the book in some ways is stand alone. While there are threads that are still hanging, we get a sense that the first story has been complete. I also want to know that those threads are interesting enough to stick around for another two books. Thirdly, the characters have to be captivating enough to want to see more of them. It is a marvel to me how many books fall into one of these traps. Either it spends too much time setting up the next two books without being a book of its own, or it is so complete that I don't actually feel like I need to read any more of the books.

Antony John does not fall into these traps. Elemental is a dark, brooding book that opens up with secrets upon secrets. The protagonist, Thomas, is apparently the only one in the Colony that doesn't have any powers to call upon the elements. This makes him an outcast-- to the point where no one can even bear to touch him. He has two friends that are as different as night and day and hint to a bit of a love triangle-- Rose and Alice. When a storm comes and their parents and the Guardians of the Colony disappear, Thomas and his friends need to discover the secrets that have remained hidden for years in order to save themselves and their loved ones.

I spent the first several chapters confused. But the tone and the interesting backstory of the characters kept me going until the secrets started revealing themselves. I think all of this was completely deliberate by the author. This book is written in first person, so all that we know is what Thom knows, which isn't very much. So he is as confused as we are. When he learns of information, it is the first time both of us know this information. I think this set up worked extremely well for the plotting of the book. And the secrets-- what bombshells. I almost thought there couldn't be any more and they kept coming, most in the last half of the book. While the last secret was something that had crossed my mind, it brought up so many questions that this didn't matter. I was hooked. As for the characters, I continue to enjoy Antony John's female characters who are strong, brave, resourceful and many times much more so than his male characters. I'm okay with this because Thomas is a likeable character and has three books to grow and change in (which I am sure he will), but Alice blows me away. She is daring and fearless. She reminds me of Tris in Divergent and I want to see more of her. Rose is less fascinating but what she lacks in intrigue she makes up for in aching sweetness.

Needless to say, I want to know more about what is going on, what has happened before and what is going to happen next. This is the perfect first book to a trilogy; we have a sense of completeness and yet, there are many places where the next two books can go-- and we want to follow for as long as we can. The characters are terrific; well developed but there is room for even more development. And there are characters that still remain mysterious, and I am sure we will learn more about. I highly recommend Elemental and can only believe that this trilogy can only get better. Antony John has written a completely different novel than his first two, which is in itself a triumph; but the fact that he has made it immensely compelling is the greater victory.

I hope you'll all join me in a month to sign up for this terrific book!

Writer's Cramp and The Perfect Day

Hey all!
My last post on Writer's Cramp was very popular, so I'm doing a reprise. Again, I highly recommend for people interested in writing to check out www.writing.com. It's free, you get to meet a lot of people, and it's tons of fun. The Writer's Cramp is a contest held every 24 hours, and you get immediate feedback from the judges. Plus, other people comment as well! Just keep your entry under 1000 words!

Another one of my favorite prompts was the following:
End your story with the following words: "And now, I have cold feet and an enormous headache."

This was my entry, enjoy!

The Perfect Day
I finger the lacy train that adorns my head. I don’t think of myself as a beautiful woman, but I admit today is different. Piles of gleaming dark curls are pinned on top of my head with fragrant lilies intertwined throughout the soft tresses. Somehow the makeup artist has done magic, and my blue eyes look bigger than usual, outlined in an invisible almond liner, a hint of blush to my cheeks, and pale pink lipstick that just adds a dash of color to my smiling mouth. The silk, pale gown hugs every curve of my body, and it drapes easily over my skin. Layers of shimmery material pool at my feet. This dress, this makeup, this veil—these are the most beautiful things I have ever put on my body. Because of the perfection I see in the mirror, I know that today is going to be a perfect day.
I wanted a garden wedding in the glorious outdoors, but David wanted it indoors at night. He said that it would make the event more formal, fit for the queen that I am. How can a girl fight with that logic? So we picked this mansion in which to hold the event. I admit that I was hesitant at first, because I couldn’t see past the cobwebs that hung on every corner, the faded carpet. But a good cleaning has done wonders. The dramatic center staircase is spotless, the wooden banisters gleam and the carpet has a rich, burnished red color. The foyer floor is paved with white marble streaked with grey and black, and a sparkling chandelier hangs from the ceiling, crystals catching the light and sprinkling rainbows around the room. I just imagine my entrance. Oh, what an entrance it will be!
The music starts. I am in a small sitting room on the second floor with my gorgeous sister Andrea and my best friend from childhood, Elaine, who are both wearing lavender satin.
Elaine squeezes my hand.  I reluctantly let her go as it is her turn to glide down the stairs.
Andrea has no words. She clings to me. I am the younger sister, and until David, we were inseparable. “Don’t mess up my hair,” I say, trying to prevent the tear that is developing in my eye. “You know what an awful time I have with it.”
Andrea sniffles. “Yes, it’s always a bird’s nest.” She kisses my cheek. “You are the most beautiful bride I have ever seen,” she whispers and then exits the room.
My father knocks on the door. “I think it’s my turn,” he says gruffly. His glasses are starting to fog. “Are you going to make it?” I whisper.
My father blows his nose. “Just allergies, my dear, just allergies.”
All the people I love are here. They are standing on the bride’s side; their faces are so dear to me.  On the other side is David’s family. In comparison, they seem stern, austere. But I know I will learn to care for them in time.
As I approach, all I can see is David. His pale, handsome features are more dramatic in the glow of the nearby candles. His father is going to perform the ceremony. David isn’t especially religious and figured it would put a more personal touch to the event.
David’s face lights up into a smile when he sees me. His teeth seem even whiter as usual. As my father sits down, and David takes my hand. His father, standing in front of us wearing dark velvet robes, says, “Now it is time.”
This pronouncement seems very odd, but I try to ignore it as this is the most special day of my life.
David takes both of my hands. “I hope you will understand in your last moments,” he said earnestly. “I have really enjoyed getting to know you. And because I know of your purity in spirit and body, I know you are the perfect virgin to sacrifice and to drink from on this important day, All Hallow’s Eve.”
Suddenly, many things make sense to me. The fact he was insistent on getting married on October 31st, the fact that he didn’t want to get married in the gazebo with the sun on our faces, the fact that we never spent time outdoors during any of our dates. The courtship was so quick, and I was so fascinated by his elegance and charisma that I never noticed his pale skin and white teeth. Tonight, they lengthen into fangs. Everyone on his side hisses, and I am almost blinded by all the teeth that are bared.
At this spectacle, I fold my arms stiffly. “I can't believe you are doing this on my perfect day!” I am in complete shock. I have fallen in love with a vampire who just wants me as food. “You have messed with the wrong girl,” I shriek. I can feel the warmth of my family buoying me up. My wig bursts into flame, my fingertips spurts fire. I can tell my beautiful, perfect dress is melting off of my blazing skin, and my soft, deerskin shoes that I love so much, that feel like floating on clouds, are completely destroyed. I come from a whole town of fire spirits, but the Elders had allowed me to leave to find human love. So much for that plan.
David howls as his tuxedo catches on fire, and he quickly goes up in ash. I turn and see the rest of my family and friends have followed suit, and we all make short work of his side of the family.
It’s been a long time since I’ve used my powers so drastically. And the more power we use, the worse the fire hangover. I sigh as I wipe away the tatters of my favorite shoes and pull out burnt metal pins from my scalp.
And now, I have cold feet and an enormous headache.

P.S. I won this Cramp. :-)

Curmudgeon's Corner: There is only one Harry Potter, Review of Insignia

Insignia (Insignia, #1)
I wrote about this book in one of my Waiting on Wednesday entries. What I was worried about ended up being a problem for me in both the ways I was expecting and ways I was not expecting. From the description, I knew that it might be similar to Ender's Game, which it was. What I didn't expect was that the three main characters would be Harry = Tom, Ron = Vik, and Hermione = Wyatt.

But I am ahead of myself. As you all may recall, I went to a Dark Days Tour event this past week, and the author Kincaid was there talking about her new book, Insignia. Despite my reservations, I was tempted from the rave reviews about it, so I picked it up while I was there. I did have problems with it, which I will get to, but it was still entertaining enough to rate as 4 stars out of 5.

Insignia is about a 14 year old boy named Tom who has nothing going for him and keeps his gambling addict father and himself clothed and housed through gaming. The government hears of him and soon he is whisked to the Pentagonal Spire where he is implanted with a neural device that allows him to enhance his knowledge with downloadable content; he effectively becomes a soldier in the military who want to use his talents for the current world war. Soon, he is pitted against the deadly but fascinating Medusa in a battle to end all battles.

As I said before, I had a hard time rating this book because through 75% of the book, I was very distracted by the fact that the author basically transplanted the Hogwarts trio into Ender's Game. Literally, I could match up plot lines and characters from each book to the ones in Insignia. At the same time, it was still entertaining to read (since I obviously liked both of the aforementioned books). And the last 25% (with one exception) made it all worth reading because it finally focused on my favorite character of all, Medusa, and it veered away from the previous formulas a bit more. The characters are lovable and funny. Since I liked Hermione the best from Harry Potter, it's not surprising that I enjoyed Wyatt, her counterpart, probably the second most after Medusa. The protagonist, Tom, is very likeable but is definitely flawed and adolescent-- Kincaid knows how to write 14 year old boy perspectives! Blackburn, the Snape equivalent, is appropriately creepy. And Yuri, the Russian, was really fun-- and possibly the most original of the cast.

Overall, it was a fun read, and I'll keep it on my shelf, but this series needs to work more on originality; hopefully the next installment will showcase this talent.

How do you feel when characters of a popular series are copied into another book?

Poll Results... the Favorite Disney Heroine is...

Belle! Belle has always been a favorite of mine and my sister's. We loved the fact that she was a bookworm (and a bit of a nerd) like we were, and the fact that her favorite part of the castle was the library. The songs in the movie were contagious: "You never know it's him, till Chapter 3!" Not to mention, she fell in love with the Beast despite his scary exterior. What's not to love?

Mulan. I love that this character came in second! Talk about one kick butt Asian chick. You've gotta love a girl who dresses as a guy but can fight as well or better than any of them. I love her relationship with her father and how she sacrifices so much to keep him safe.

Ariel, who was in a very close third place behind Mulan, is another favorite of mine. I think I've always wanted to be a mermaid. And I was one of those kids who embarrassingly bellowed "Part of Your World" in every swimming pool and puffed out my non-existent chest at the end of the song (yes, yes, the Reprise). If you haven't seen the musical, you must. I think Ariel is even cooler because she chooses to save everyone instead of fulfilling her greatest desire-- to be with Prince Eric.

Lilo, from Lilo and Stitch, is another favorite. Although the combination of her and Stitch together is what is precious. I love how fearless and loyal she is no matter what. Talk about unconditional love (as Stitch is destroying everything in the house). Not to mention how she feeds Pudge, the fish, with peanut butter.

Giselle. Love her. Enchanted is one of my all time favorite movies. I love how it pokes fun lovingly at all the princess Disney movies that have come before. And I love how she develops and grows up throughout the movie. I died laughing during her songs, especially the ones where she makes all the nasty creatures to do her cleaning!

And last but not least, Tiana from Princess and the Frog. I didn't see this movie until much later, but she is pretty awesome-- she works so hard for a living, and really makes a future for herself. I love how she is such a great model to all little girls out there.

So there you have it! I'll have another poll up very soon! Thanks to all who voted!

Q: What drove you to start book blogging in the first place?

This is a question I love to answer because my story is a little unusual. At first, when I started doing reviews last December for Amazon, I was all about the free books because I was spending way too much on my Kindle and needed a free hobby. Then I really started getting into meeting new authors and supporting their novels. I ended up keeping in touch with a number of them through email or Goodreads and realized that I could generate more interest for these authors through a blog (plus, several of them mentioned that I should go ahead and start one since I had a ton of material already). It's been such a great adventure, and I'm thrilled that after a month, my little blog has so much traffic! Have a great Friday!

Dark Days Tour Update

Profile Picture
I was fortunate enough to go to The Dark Days Tour that came to St. Louis this past Monday. The featured authors were Veronica Roth (INSURGENT), Aprilynne Pike (DESTINED), Dan Wells (PARTIALS), and S.J. Kincaid (INSIGNIA).

Most of the people there were for Veronica Roth (me included). I've already blogged a review about Partials (not a bad book but skimpy on the medical details), and Kincaid's Insignia was a Waiting on Wednesday entry (worried that it may be too similar to Ender's game, but it's gotten rave reviews). I had never heard of Aprilynne Pike, but after I heard that her series was about "magic and lots of kissing," and her in depth discussion of her villain, I knew I should take a look.
They gave a brief synopsis of each book and then opened up the floor to questions. I have to say that Dan Wells and Aprilynne Pike were the most fun to listen to. Some of the most notable questions were about how to create an interesting villain (which is spawning a whole blog topic on its own because this is one of my favorite things to talk about!) and how Battlestar Galactica's non-impressive ending was inspiration for Dan's book Partials (he basically wanted to put Hermione in Battlestar Galactica). Veronica at this point looked really sad because apparently she has not finished Battlestar Galactica. She should-- it's a great show. Dune by Frank Herbert was a very popular favorite book among the authors.

I ended up buying a copy of Insignia (by the way, the inspiration for the title came from Kincaid walking into a Best Buy and seeing that brand). So we'll see how it goes. I'm exponentially having less and less time to read (sadly!!!) but hopefully I can finish it soon and post a review for you guys.

They each had their own signing line, which was nice. Unfortunately for poor Kincaid (who here thought she was a guy from her pen name??? *raises hand*), since her book hadn't come out yet, she didn't have much of a line.

Veronica Roth had, unsurprisingly, the longest line. And yes, I took a picture with her. I am THAT dorky! And I am dorky enough to post the picture twice ;-)

Possibly the best part of it all was meeting other bloggers, fans, and just people that love to read. I met someone who is a teacher and gets books signed on a regular basis for her school's library. I remet Jessi from the wonderful Reading in the Corner blog. And I got to sit down with Antony John, the author of the wonderful Five Flavors of Dumb and the terrific Elemental, a dystopian YA novel, coming out Nov 21st. I'm lucky enough to be a beta reader for the second installment of the trilogy! And tune in for that amazing ARC giveaway of Elemental, which will likely be in September.

Waiting On Wednesday (4)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

My fourth selection for Waiting on Wednesday is Promised by Caragh M. O'Brien.

Promised (Birthmarked, #3)

Goodreads Book Description: After defying the ruthless Enclave, surviving the wasteland, and upending the rigid matriarchy of Sylum, Gaia Stone now faces her biggest challenge ever. She must lead the people of Sylum back to the Enclave and persuade the Protectorat to grant them refuge from the wasteland. In Gaia’s absence, the Enclave has grown more cruel, more desperate to experiment on mothers from outside the wall, and now the stakes of cooperating or rebelling have never been higher. Is Gaia ready, as a leader, to sacrifice what—or whom—she loves most?

Why I Am Excited: Birthmarked, the first book in this trilogy, was one of my early dystopian YA reads. It was very compelling and I've been following eagerly since then. The second book, Prized, was a strong addition to the trilogy, and its own stand alone novel, not just filler (something that I really look for).

Why I am Worried: Bringing these two civilizations successfully will not be easy... but she's done a good job with the trilogy thus far. So we'll wait and see!
I'm really excited to see how O'Brien closes up this fantastic trilogy!

100+ Follower Giveaway, SIGNED hard back copy of Insurgent by Veronica Roth

The 100+ follower giveaway has already started, but I wanted to talk about the book I'm giving away, a SIGNED, yes, a SIGNED copy of Insurgent, the second book in the wildly popular Divergent series by Veronica Roth.

I admit it. I really am a fan girl. I just got back from the Dark Days tour, and now I am one of those people who take pictures with other much more famous people. Well, I have a reason, I have a blog where I have to post this to prove I was... there... OK, it sounded more convincing in my head.

Veronica Roth is super cute and really down to earth! I'll blog more about the Tour later this week.

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)Goodreads Book Description: One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Vote on my Amazon Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I'll put it right out there. I was totally in love with the first book, Divergent. It was fresh, fierce, and had a kick butt heroine in Tris. Not to mention it was a training/school book-- a type of book I tend to adore. At the end of the first book, we already know we are going to war, leaving school and factions behind. So the second book was already at a disadvantage going into things for these reasons and the mere fact that it's a second book in a trilogy.

This book takes off immediately where the last one ended. Roth wrote in her blog that she made the creative decision to not revisit anything that happened in the first book. Because of this, at first the book is a jumble of confusion, and I may have made more sense if I had reread the first one right before this one. The factionless have more of a story, and we get more fleshed out characters.

The first half of the book is pretty dreary. Tris is extremely depressed (understandably). But there are only so many pages I can take of her continual guilt trip.. Overall, the story has a darker tone and almost gets too heavy.

However, things change when secrets start to be revealed. My absolute favorite part of the book was when we are introduced to some Erudite characters who end up being more three dimensional than Tris ever imagined. The last secret revealed made the whole book worth reading.

While I had some reservations, I thought overall this book was well written and ramped up heavily at the end. The last 25% of the book was really terrific. Just personally, I think that I liked the first book better because we are first introduced into this world that is so completely different than has been created before. However, the second book is a solid companion to the first, and I am excited to see how the story ends.

I am thrilled to be able to give away a signed copy of the hard back book along with Shawn Keenan's wonderful The Intern's Tale!
