Waiting on Wednesday (14)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This book has already received rave reviews, and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Black City (A Black City Novel, Book #1)
Goodreads Book Description: A dark and tender post-apocalyptic love story set in the aftermath of a bloody war

In a city where humans and Darklings are now separated by a high wall and tensions between the two races still simmer after a terrible war, sixteen-year-olds Ash Fisher, a half-blood Darkling, and Natalie Buchanan, a human and the daughter of the Emissary, meet and do the unthinkable—they fall in love. Bonded by a mysterious connection that causes Ash’s long-dormant heart to beat, Ash and Natalie first deny and then struggle to fight their forbidden feelings for each other, knowing if they’re caught, they’ll be executed—but their feelings are too strong.

When Ash and Natalie then find themselves at the center of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to pull the humans and Darklings back into war, they must make hard choices that could result in both their deaths.

Why Am I Excited: I love the combination between dystopian and paranormal fiction. If done right, it could be fantastic.

Why I am Worried: It sounds like the love story is the center of this story. Too often, the romance either doesn't ring true, or is too sappy and heavy. I hope that we care about these characters enough for this to be a strength, not a weakness of this novel.

  1. Great choice (from what I've heard). Audrey read all of the Penguin Breathless Reads books for 2012 and said that this was the best of them. She was truly (and very pleasantly) surprised.

  3. Thanks for the WoW love. What a gorgeous cover! Wow! After reading the summary, I'd have to agree with your sentiments concerning romance being the driving force of the novel. Is this the start of a series? **new follower :)**

  9. Great Cover, Thanks for visiting. Each of your contest needs a different comment so I would be a cat, I love Donna Leon's mysteries set in Venice and would love to visit, or maybe live there and I would chose to heal.

  10. Hmmm, interesting premise, but I wish I knew what a Darkling is in this context. And yeah, it does seem that the romance is central to the story, which isn't usually what I prefer either.

  11. I really want to read this one too!
I would pick to be a cat - they have the life and are so freaking cute!
I'd choose healing, I'm a nurse, so I think that goes well.
I'd go on a round-the-world trip if money wasn't an issue - there are so many places that I want to visit. If I had to pick just one, I think I would choose Rome as I haven't been there yet.

  14. Thanks for your lovely comment! :D This book looks awesome, sort of like the plot to Romeo and Juliet, with the whole families hating eachother and things. ^^ Thanks for sharing this awesome book!
