I hope you all had a better Valentine's weekend than I did... I was sick in bed! But the good thing about being sick in bed is that the only thing you can do other than sleep is read-- so I got to catch up on some books.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars
My Review: Splintered by A.G. Howard joins the ranks in recent YA lit in taking a beloved classic children's tale and bringing it into a more contemporary setting. Many others have failed. Howard does not. Splintered is a darkly inventive, Tim Burtonesque Wonderland adventure that introduces us to a wonderful protagonist, Alyssa, a descendent of Alice Liddell who inspired Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland. A mental illness seems to afflict all the female descendants of Alice, and Alyssa herself starts hearing insects and plants speak, something that her own mother is currently in a mental institution for. Along with her best friend, Jeb, she realizes the world is not what it seems and will travel far and do the unthinkable to save her mother's life.
I don't want to give away any secrets from this novel because it's a marvelous adventure from start to finish. I absolutely adored the protagonist. She is young and malleable, properly so for her age, but she learns and grows as the book progresses. The pacing is very well done as secrets are revealed at the right time and place. Jeb is a wonderful love interest-- a guy that anyone would be lucky to be with. Morpheus, on the other hand, is a great foil and counterpart to Jeb. We can see how he entices Alyssa, but at the same time, frightens her. I love how Howard doesn't slip into the usual mistake of making him two dimensional-- he is very well developed and we can see how he has become what he is, and how he is not beyond redemption. I also want to mention how terrific each detail of Wonderland is-- Howard knows the story well and inserts delightful detail to all of her twisted creations.
Overall, I was extremely impressed by this novel-- a darkly enticing tale that turns Wonderland on its head-- in a way that only respects and amplifies the original. Howard is definitely an author to watch.

Writer's Cramp: A Honky Tonk Life
Prompt: Place anywhere in the story, the sentence- "This was the life of a country star."
Tommy Lee didn't give himself a chance to think too hard; if he did, he might just plumb give up. He set his guitar case down by his feet. The dust on the road swirled around his worn brown boots, and he tilted his hat forward to keep the sand out of his eyes. His hair had been long prior to the apocalypse, but it was longer and dirtier now, some dark strands caked to his face with old sweat.
The last few days didn't go so well. He lost his shotgun two days prior to a zombie girl, who he thought he had recognized from his past-- blond curls and a dress with faded flowers. Maybe an old fan? Maybe, but he couldn't recognize any features when she turned around, with her face half rotten off with visible gums and teeth from the hole in her cheek. She took him by surprise, and when she lurched towards him with gnarled, moldy fingers, he took his guitar and ran... and left the gun sitting where he had been sunning himself. It was obvious what his priorities were. And as he knew from experience, he was good at running away.
He figured playing and singing kept him sane, kept him human. Kept him different than the lumbering ghouls that followed his every step. He was used to followers running after him. But they usually didn't want to eat him. Usually.
He had been an alcoholic—he could admit that now, now that he couldn’t drink booze anymore, since dulling one’s senses increased the likelihood of being caught by a zombie. He hadn’t been the nicest guy either—he cringed when he remembered how he treated some of his most devout fans. He almost fell on one in a drunken stupor, threw up on another, and shouted expletives to yet another. At the time, he had rationalized, telling himself, “This is the life of a country star.” What would he do to get another chance to make up for past mistakes? But now, there were no stadiums of fans chanting his name. There were no chances for him to shine in the spotlight. Now, it was surviving by the edge of his teeth.
He had been on his own for a long time, and was hoping one day to find someone else in this barren wasteland. Plenty of empty houses with cupboards to plunder; plenty of houses with zombies that never escaped. Apparently, they weren’t so good at turning door knobs. He had a nasty surprise when he opened a closet a week ago.
He stuck a blade of grass in the corner of his mouth. There were benefits to the end of the world. Instead of writing songs about dead dogs, pickup trucks, or a wife that left him, he could sing verses about losing a limb, escaping death at every turn, or a relative or ex-wife that became a zombie. He was in the middle of the unfortunate observation that the most obvious rhyme with "zombie" was his own name "Tommy," when he heard an excited little whisper.
"Mister? Mister? Are you him? Are you really the famous Tommy Lee?"
Tommy turned around and saw a young boy wearing tattered rags and no shoes, streaks of soot on his cheeks. At first he was shocked, because he had not seen another human being in days, maybe months. He was losing track of time. “Who are you?” The words came out harsher than he intended.
The boy took a step back. “Artie. I’m a huge fan. My dad--“ he stuttered. “My dad used to play your music all the time on our stereo system. That is, when he was still alive.”
Tommy couldn’t believe this kid had survived this whole time. Who was taking care of him? He was skin and bones. Then he realized. This was his chance. His chance to make up for a lifetime of mistakes and disappointments.
He knelt down in front of the boy. “Do you have a favorite song?”
The boy gave him a shy smile. “I really like It’s a Honky Tonk Life.”
Tommy had to laugh. That was his least original song, but probably his most well-known. And the irony of singing that particular song now was not lost on him.
He flattened the case, popped the latches, and took out his guitar. He would have to break into another music store soon—he only had one set of strings left in his case. “For my biggest fan,” he said to Artie, who was clapping his hands gleefully. “I’ll sing this song.”
He started strumming with his worn pick. Chord after chord swelled from the well-loved instrument. He had been through everything with his guitar—the highs and lows. And now, it was helping him earn his redemption.

1) I have loads of awesome interviews coming up. I'm also starting to do some character interviews, including one of Morpheus from Splintered!
2) Jonathan Maberry of Rot and Ruin fame has decided to do an interview! I'm very excited.

3. I have just joined Pinterest. Yes, I have sold my soul. I still have no idea how to use it and not sure when I'll figure it out. I guess I only retweeted something for the first time two weeks ago, so I'm learning, albeit slowly. People need to stop creating stuff you have to join-- too confusing :-)
4. People really seemed to like my list of my top 5 most disappointing reads of the year. I'll have to do some other top five lists :-) Please let me know if you have any other suggestions of what you'd like to see on my blog.
5. I have consistently been a top 1000 Amazon reviewer for the past week. Thanks again for all the tremendous support. I've now fulfilled a couple of my hugest goals-- over 1000 followers of my blog and ranking under 1000 on Amazon. Now, only the sky's the limit! I'll continue to post/review as much as I can!
6. I have unfortunately been totally bogged down at work as well as completely backed up on reviews. I'm on hiatus right now from reviewing your books, but I'll let you know as soon as I'm back up and running.

Winner of the Spooktacular Giveaway and Saturday Updates
I'm on a much needed vacation, but it's quickly coming to an end, agh!

Some updates:
1. Well, I was very briefly in the top 1000 Amazon reviewers, but as I suspected, it was short lived since I was ranked 998. But because of your continued support, I bet I'll get there again someday!
2. I am adding a terrific interview and giveaway with Ellen Oh, author of the upcoming book Prophecy, to be released in January. It'll likely be in the first week of January. Stay posted!
3. The next giveaway starts on 11/5 and is a blog hop for The Violet Fox, a really fun Robin Hood type novel (but starring a kick butt girl instead)!
4. I'm going on hiatus for book review requests again for a little while, because of all of the great books I have backed up and manuscripts I have to review! I'll let you know when I'm able to start that up again. Hopefully sooner rather than later!

Winner of Incarnate giveaway and Updates

As promised... here is my review of IF I LIE by Corrine Jackson. I was completely floored by it, and I hope you will be too.
To make things even more exciting, I have been in contact with Corrine, who has graciously agreed to do both an interview and a giveaway of this book! And we'll get a preview of her new paranormal, Touched, which is coming out in a few months!!!
If I Lie is about the amazing protagonist, Sophie Topper Quinn, who now goes by Q because her father doesn't want her name to have any association to her mother (Sophie the elder) who left them. Quinn is ostracized by her father and the rest of her military town because a photo surfaces of her cheating on her deployed boyfriend, Carey, who was already a town hero. But nothing is what it seems.
Quinn is probably one of the most brave and loyal characters I have ever seen. She has a huge heart, and it springs from each page. I don't think I would have had the courage she had to keep a secret so honorably. All of the characters were deftly drawn, and I haven't seen more three dimensional characters in a long, long time. Each of them had a distinct personality. My personal favorite was her veteran best friend, George. He will not be easy to forget. Past and present is beautifully intertwined in a seamless pattern, and even with jumps in time, the narrative is easy to follow.
I have nothing bad to say about this book, and that's really saying something, since I usually have SOMETHING to say being as picky as I am. It's an amazing debut, and I raced breathlessly to the end, even though I have project deadlines looming over my head. It was that good.
Overall, a smashing first novel by Corrine Jackson-- she is an author to watch.

Q: Christmas in July! Someone gives you a gift card for two books (whatever that costs). What two books will you buy?
Geez. I was hoping it would be an easy question today... no such luck. Well, there are some books that I would love to add to my book collection. I would probably get a nice hardback version of Bitterblue, by Cashore, which probably was my favorite read of the year. I would also like to utilize the fact that I can spend whatever I want for these books, so would love to get a first edition of something-- like a really old copy of Shakespeare's plays or Lord of the Rings trilogy. :-)
