100+ Follower Giveaway, SIGNED hard back copy of Insurgent by Veronica Roth

The 100+ follower giveaway has already started, but I wanted to talk about the book I'm giving away, a SIGNED, yes, a SIGNED copy of Insurgent, the second book in the wildly popular Divergent series by Veronica Roth.

I admit it. I really am a fan girl. I just got back from the Dark Days tour, and now I am one of those people who take pictures with other much more famous people. Well, I have a reason, I have a blog where I have to post this to prove I was... there... OK, it sounded more convincing in my head.

Veronica Roth is super cute and really down to earth! I'll blog more about the Tour later this week.

Insurgent (Divergent, #2)Goodreads Book Description: One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Vote on my Amazon Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

I'll put it right out there. I was totally in love with the first book, Divergent. It was fresh, fierce, and had a kick butt heroine in Tris. Not to mention it was a training/school book-- a type of book I tend to adore. At the end of the first book, we already know we are going to war, leaving school and factions behind. So the second book was already at a disadvantage going into things for these reasons and the mere fact that it's a second book in a trilogy.

This book takes off immediately where the last one ended. Roth wrote in her blog that she made the creative decision to not revisit anything that happened in the first book. Because of this, at first the book is a jumble of confusion, and I may have made more sense if I had reread the first one right before this one. The factionless have more of a story, and we get more fleshed out characters.

The first half of the book is pretty dreary. Tris is extremely depressed (understandably). But there are only so many pages I can take of her continual guilt trip.. Overall, the story has a darker tone and almost gets too heavy.

However, things change when secrets start to be revealed. My absolute favorite part of the book was when we are introduced to some Erudite characters who end up being more three dimensional than Tris ever imagined. The last secret revealed made the whole book worth reading.

While I had some reservations, I thought overall this book was well written and ramped up heavily at the end. The last 25% of the book was really terrific. Just personally, I think that I liked the first book better because we are first introduced into this world that is so completely different than has been created before. However, the second book is a solid companion to the first, and I am excited to see how the story ends.

I am thrilled to be able to give away a signed copy of the hard back book along with Shawn Keenan's wonderful The Intern's Tale!

  1. I love books where there is a interesting school where the characters go to-- for example, Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Divergent has different factions where kids go to get trained. I really love those types of books!
